The Orange County Bridge |2| Engineering Program is a cohort-based learning community at Saddleback College, Santa Ana College, Cal State Fullerton & UC Irvine that focuses on increasing the participation of unrepresented minorities, women, and veterans in the field of engineering. The program will help participants explore careers in engineering and place them on an academic pathway to become engineers. Recently, Santa Ana College B2E student, Priscilla Guerrero had the opportunity to write about her internship experience with ViewSonic.
“Growing up in an environmentally conscious household we always implemented new ideas to conserve resources and energy. Being a California native, where more than 98% of the state is in drought and 44% is in exceptional drought, we had to come up with ways to conserve water. One way we did this was by creating a mechanism that reused water from our washing machine to water the garden while also using an all-natural, chemical free, homemade detergent. We learned by doing and being environmentally conscious, I grew a passion towards environmental engineering.
I cannot stress enough how important experience is towards any career and the Bridge 2 Engineering program has bridged the gap between education and experience. Before this program I hardly had any experience towards my career, now my resume is overloaded with fundamental skills and experience. All while also networking and making important relationships with other aspiring engineers in this cohort-based program.
Currently I am interning at ViewSonic Corporation; a globally recognized leader in visual display technology. I work with quality engineer Tommy Jue and service operation/technical support manager Jeff Famatid who mentor me on how to think like an engineer. While working for ViewSonic I measure and document the conformance of products to internal & vendor specifications, analyze failure of products, assist in the preparation of Evaluation Reports for content and accuracy, learn to identify and classify material and provide feedback to improve item master descriptions.
