The Orange County Bridge |2| Engineering Program is a cohort-based learning community at Saddleback College, Santa Ana College, Cal State Fullerton & UC Irvine that focuses on increasing the participation of unrepresented minorities, women, and veterans in the field of engineering. The program will help participants explore careers in engineering and place them on an academic pathway to become engineers. Recently, Cal State Fullerton B2E student, Roberto Perez-Mendoza, had the opportunity to write about his internship experience with ViewSonic:
"Ever since I was 13 years-old, I wanted to learn how to manipulate computers so I am a double major in Computer Science and Child & Adolescent Development. The reason I’m double majoring is because I have passion for both industries, and believe I can apply these two majors at once in my career considering I currently work as an elementary school Computer Instructor Specialist. My job is to teach Kindergarten - 6th grade students basic computer skills and introduce them to computer programming. My ultimate goal is to obtain a Master's degree as a Software Engineer.
The first week of my summer internship, I started comparing and writing annotations for ViewBoard, ViewBoard 2.0 and ViewBoard 2.1 software. I also searched for and reported any bugs from within the software, as well as provided some ideas to include in the future; they took into consideration all the ideas I gave them. My job was also to confirm if ViewBoard 2.1 was compatible with Google Drive. As the internship progressed, I started testing more software such as Solstice and DisplayItX. The software had multiple bugs that had to be reported to the engineers in Taiwan, so I produced the documentation needed for the reports to my supervisor, Romell.
My internship concluded with writing customer "quick start" manuals for the CDE7060T and CDE8451-TL displays. One of the staff reviewed them, and really liked the way I created the guides. I also installed 17 licences for the Solstice pod.
I feel like I learned a lot throughout these 10 weeks of my summer internship at ViewSonic. I realized that being a software engineer requires a lot of teamwork to troubleshoot any problem with the software as well as to share ideas to make the software more sophisticated."
